Camera Playing Card Counter

To count playing cards or paper sheets use a cheaper webcam imposes big challenges to digital image processing technologies. As an example, manufactures of playing cards need a fast and efficient way to control the qualities of their products by counting decks of playing cards without pulling them out of their cases and without putting them into a well-controlled environment. To the convenient of the playing card manufacturers, this kind of practice is highly desired. However, to the nightmares of the developers of card counters, an ill-controlled environment can introduce fetal noisy light to make the counting of playing card impossible.

The unique Physical Linguistic Vision Technologies developed in Yang's Scientific Research Institute, LLC., provide an efficient way to solve the problem with relative simple settings and working conditions. First, a cheap webcam can be used to count playing card, this means the user don’t need to buy expensive equipment and can take a good advantage of a PC that already sit on the desktop. Secondly, the user can simply hold the deck of playing cards in front of the webcam and the number of counts of the playing cards can be automatically counted at a rate up 25 decks per second. Screen Snapshots

The followings are screen snapshots of the BarSeer 1.0.3.3. The first image shows BarSeer counts a deck of 54 playing cards contained in the case. Observe that the playing cards are packed so dense that human eyes can not tell he boundaries between cards. In this case the background is black.

In the following case the background is white and a deck of 50 playing cards was counted.

The Developing Test of CardSeer

To demonstrate the super counting power of the CardSeer program, engineers in Yang's constructed a simple testing platform shown in the following figure.

Observe that in this experiment, a simple lamp was used to provide the stable lightening condition and a webcam(640x480 pixels) that connected to a laptop was put in front of a deck of playing cards. The interface of CardSeer was shown on the screen of the laptop showing the current count of the number of playing cards was 53.77 and the exact count of this deck of playing cards was 54. The close up setting of this test is shown as follows. Observe that even human eyes should be most likely fail to count this deck of playing cards up to this kind of accuracy.

The followings are some screenshots of the CardSeer software when a deck of 54 playing cards were counted.

•2. Screenshot taken at a given moment under the same setting.

•3. Screenshot taken a while after the previous given moment under the same setting. Observe that the behavior of CardSeer is stable over time.
